Slow Cooker
« on: December 30, 2015, 07:35:24 pm »
So I've been thinking about buying a slow cooker. I like the idea of coming home and finding dinner done, especially as working days it's dinner for one as my daughter eats at the childminder's 4 days a week. 3 people at work have them and make meat stews and meat curries (with sauce from jars) and I can see the benefit for meat if you want a slow braise but as we're vegetarian I keep thinking maybe it's not worth it for another 'gadget' that won't be used and takes up space.

So apart from vegetable stew what else could I do in a slow cooker?

We have a slow cooker and it is a very worthy tool-however we are meat eaters and it is usually a joint or stew of some sort that gets cooked. For you Tea -veg as you say -but fish dishes too? It has the effect of really allowing food to soak in and absorb so much flavour and loses nothing as it does so.

They've got them for £10 in Tesco at the moment which is one of the reasons I'm thinking it could be good @Indigo Warrior. Of course it's only worth it if it gets used because I don't have a lot of storage space.

Those recipes are interesting @Max414 I hadn't thought about chilli.

I love mine and have worked my way through a lot of the slow cooker packet mixes by Schwartz - obviously I've done them with meat but I would have thought the sausage and cannellini bean casserole would be fab with veggie sausages and you could no doubt adjust lots of the others to suit you.  I saw a few good hacks for slow cookers on Facebook the other day, I reckon if you look on newslink or whatever it's called and YouTube you might come across a fair few things you like the look of.  I was astounded to see that you can do jacket potatoes in it!

I have often thought of getting a slow cooker myself @tea if there is one in Tesco for £10 that definitely could be my next buy. I found this board on pintrest and all of the recipes are for slow cooker's. Looks like their is a lot you can do with them, here is the link.

@tea we have one and use it all the time and not just for meat dishes.

I'm sure if you get one and for £10 you can't go far wrong you will find loads of vegetarian recipes you can try.

Right @Kat73 I'm going to have to see about the jacket potatoes because I like proper jacket potatoes but not microwave ones. I've found a few lasagne recipes, macaroni cheese and curries and I think I'm sold on the idea. For £10 it's not a great loss if I throw it out (20 Silk Cut probably cost more than that now) and I really like the idea of coming home to dinner and it being done. I think it's either a slow cooker or I might consider a microwave, but I didn't really like microwaved food before.

If it's hard to clean I'll be disappointed.

Yep totally getting one tomorrow! You can make fudge in it http://www.ayearofslowcooking.com/2014/06/perfectslowcookerfudge.html?m=1 and baked potatoes!! The Tesco £10 is a 3litre one so I'm thinking it's probably a bit big but I'm getting excited!!
