I think i've hit rock bottom
« on: March 04, 2018, 03:10:36 pm »
Well hello there all.

So i'm here hoping for some support and friends.

To try and cut a long story short.. I started smoking when i was 13 and have given up a few times for around 12 months.  The usual fall of a few out socialising is what felled me each time.  You'd think we'd learn hey.  I turn 40 this month and have been trying to give up for the last 8 years.  Its been a real mess of prolonged periods on nicotine mints and then back to the fags.  My new partner from 2011 does not like smoking and to effects and purposes, i'm a secret smoker to boot although he does know i have some now and then (He doesn't know its a pack a day)

Its controlling and ruining my life now.  Its like a never ending nightmare.  I lie and go on false errands to have a crafty fag, sneak out, stay downstairs at night to have some when everyones in bed.  The fag come first! Every packet is the last... Its just so draining and i feel broke!

I've been listening to Allan Carrs easy way and have just reached the end and smoked my last cig at 2.15pm.  I think if i don't stop i will slowly go a bit potty if nothing else.

I just need somewhere to talk about it and find some buddies who have had such a long journey and eventually managed it?

Thanks for reading.

Cor blimey!! How on Earth did you manage to keep it secret like that? The buying of them? The cost of them? The smell of them?

I think you are going to find life so much less stressful without all of that!

So what is your plan?

Hi Tea

Its surprising how devious you can be for the nicotine  002.  I ALWAYS had a stash of normal mints, nicotine mints and perfume etc on me.  I would deliberately keep my distance after one, busy doing jobs etc.  You become really efficient at it.  I would just buy them while i was out at work etc and as i have a good job, the cost has never been an issue.  You wouldn't believe how many half full packets I've wizzed in the bin and then been out buying more in the morning!

My plan is to go cold turkey and keep listening to my smoking audio. I do agree with all that Allan says.  He even calls the secret smoker one of the most insidious versions.  I've messed around with patches and mints and everything for so long that i just want rid of it.

Thank you Max.  I need a bloody comfy rest, i can tell ya!

You will have support here and people to listen to you and not judge. ;D  Welcome to the forum.

Going cold turkey is very brave, but please if you think you will falter don't dismiss using alternative aids, gum, champix whatever just so long as you quit.

I remember Hellsbelles being an ex secret smoker. I just can't imagine how one manages it in the rain and snow for example.   :nobeer:

I think you're going to need lots of delicious hot beverages and I wholly recommend you think about some Fisherman's Friends - they taste disgusting, but that yucky taste really takes your mind off things. By the time one of those is gone, so have the bad thoughts. But also maybe get something nicer like some nice sharp sherbet lemons or roses apples.

Hi @Wearylass and nice to meet you. My mum is a secret smoker so i know the ins and outs. They live in the south of france so every day she drives down to shops to get baguettes with the roof down and wearing her single leather glove puffing away ha! Then comes the chewing gum. Wee freshen up when shes home and my step dad is none the wiser  :)

Turning forty is a milestone and i reckon this is your year. Whats the alternative...youre back here when your fifty with another ten years of smoking under your belt? You sound well versed in quitting, as most of us are here. Cold turkey can be done. @Enough42 is a recent cold turkey quitter and shes doing AMAZING after a tricky first few weeks. I think @Nicky40 is cold turkey too with the very occasional use of a vape on nights out and shes doing brilliant too  :) @Weebeastie is CT too? Sorry its hard to remember everyone as there is quite a few of us.

Id used patches it quits many moons ago but decided to give them a try again with the lozenges and this time round i am smashing it. What i did a lot and still do is read this forum and other sites all about the damage smoking does to you but also how your body repairs itself, and also reading about all the side effects of quitting, just really educate yourself in the subject. Allen Carr book is great but there is a wealth of information on this site too. And if you just keep reading it just really drills it into your head, well it did for me anyway  :)

Youve come to the right place for help cos we are all in this together, so welcome to the gang  :)

Well done for coming here @Wearylass , this site is a great help with brilliant support so you have a better chance having joined.  You can do it, many here are on 2nd, 3rd and more attempts.  Good luck.
Smoked for most of my adult life (and a fair bit of my childhood!).  Managed a two year quit 2014-2016 but started again!  Quit again on 6th January 2018 and lasted 7 months!  Back on the wagon again now...........

Hello @Wearylass .  I've been cold turkey 6 weeks, going on 7.  I've tried other methods and they worked for a while.  In the end it is whatever works for you.  You can't carry on with the stress of being a secret smoker Are you sure he doesn't suspect?  How often has my partner told me I stank of smoke and I swore I hadn't smoked (well I hadn't in the previous five minutes).  Lots of support here. You can do it.
Quit date 18 Jan 2018.

And a very big welcome from me too

I remember all of those feelings that you are expressing

You are doing the most wonderful thing

When I started I did not believe there would ever be a day when I didn't crave cigarettes

This is the thing I love about being quit. I get up and rather than immediately going out for a fag I have a coffee and it doesn't cross my mind. Amazing

I did Allan Carr book and cold turkey. That was the best thing for me

You have found an amazing place here
