Bleeding Gums
« on: April 18, 2015, 10:35:57 pm »
A common symptom when stopping smoking is bleeding gum's. If you have a issue with this it is best to go to your dentist for a check up, it could be a sign of gingivitis or gum disease.

It could also just be the fact that when you smoke all the toxins in the cigarettes cause the Blood Vessels in the gums to shrink and the gums don't bleed as the vessels have shrunk reducing the blood levels.
However once you stop smoking the reverse will happen and the Blood Vessels will open up  to their normal size bringing more blood to the gums hence the bleeding. It is a common complaint, so try not to worry too much.

Ive had bleeding gums this last week for the first time in my life. I only notice it when i brush my teeth. I did wonder if it was stop smoking related. Its not sore or anything, i just hope it goes away!

Me too, but its not like I need a transfusion, it must be smoking related, but whiter teeth are a bonus. Ive got listerine but as Sally says Corsodyl is what doctors dish out.
Quit 16th November 2017.

I had this in my last quit (cant remember how many weeks/months it was) but it hasn't come back yet, quite common I think in quitters.
Smoked for most of my adult life (and a fair bit of my childhood!).  Managed a two year quit 2014-2016 but started again!  Quit again on 6th January 2018 and lasted 7 months!  Back on the wagon again now...........

That sounds awful @Millie . I remember my pal once had a gum infection and it was as you described. You might need some antibiotics. Hope it clears up for you. I had a week of bleeding but then it just stopped.

Aw @Millie I hope the dentist (and some anitbiotics can sort that for you).  I have gum disease, as do my Elder brother and younger sister, a dentist said it is hereditary though I'm sure all of us smoking didn't help.

That really does sound awful @Millie and I can't believe you have to wait that long for an appointment, its ridiculous.
